Optimizing health and performance among young female athletes

Establishing sustainable habits along the life continuum, from adolescence and into early adulthood: 

My mission is to help young women feel strong and confident in whatever they want to do. When I work with a female athlete, in addition to physically optimizing their movement patterns and strength/motor control, I address the 3 major problems women struggle with when trying to operate within the current athletic training models. 

I have seen these problems repeatedly, and I help women overcome these barriers to obtain sustainable physical, mental, and emotional health for life. These 3 issues begin early in childhood, and the sooner they are rooted out and replaced with healthier, sustainable habits, the sooner these women will become more successful and confident in their current athletic performance, and the longer they can maintain those healthy habits throughout life

I want to see women cherish the gifts of their bodies as middle and high school athletes, into college, and even into motherhood, when they will be bestowed the honor of raising families and the next generation of healthy female athletes. 

In an unhinged society, ruled by extremes, I want to see these young generations of women find balance in life. At one extreme, burnout and injury are too common. At the other extreme, overwhelm and defeat are just as prevalent.

Here are the top 3 problems to address:

  1. Stress exceeds capacity.

  2. Societal pressure to BE a certain way and DO a certain thing.

  3. Information overload (ie TikTok brain).

These issues are not unique to women, but in the context of our modern world, these problems pose consequences that are unique to women. And the consequences are compounded with wear and tear on the physiological and psychological systems in which the issues operate and the consequences manifest.

The solutions to the problems are not easy “fixes”. I don’t believe any type of therapy, medication, or experience will ever provide a quick “fix”. Solutions require intentional interventions and integration. This takes time and requires dedicated practices to unlearn maladaptive, conditioned thought and movement patterns, and to then relearn effective and healthy patterns.

Here’s how I help young women solve these problems:

  1. Understand, establish, and respect individualized stress capacities.

  2. Reframe motivations and expectations to operate from personal motivations instead of outsourced social influences.

  3. Educate and empower young women to learn and think within a love-based paradigm instead of fear-based. 

Although we often think of life in phases, life is really a continuum. Sometimes it’s easier to view life in phases or chapters because it helps us justify the pain and struggle of the time, knowing that it’s temporary. Even looking back on phases of life, you may think, “I can’t believe I did that” or “I don’t know how I made it through that”. 

A more compassionate approach is to view your life as a continuum. You are constantly fluctuating, learning, and evolving. This perspective allows you to be more forgiving of setbacks or mistakes, and permits room for greater growth. After all, your soul’s sole purpose of life on earth is to learn and grow.
